The School of Social Sciences at the College of Post Graduate Studies in Agricultural Sciences (CPGSAS), Umiam, established in 2009, is committed to advancing knowledge and strengthening capacity in the socio-economic dimensions of agriculture and rural development. The School undertakes interdisciplinary teaching, research, and extension activities to address critical issues in Agricultural Economics, Extension Education, and Agribusiness Management (ABM).

The School contributes significantly to the development of skilled human resources capable of supporting sustainable agricultural development, policy formulation, rural livelihood enhancement, and agribusiness entrepreneurship, particularly within the North Eastern Hill (NEH) region. With a strong emphasis on applied research and field-based learning, the School actively collaborates with farming communities, institutions, and stakeholders to promote innovative, inclusive, and region-specific development approaches.

The School offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Extension, along with a Master’s programme in Agri-Business Management (ABM), in accordance with the ICAR-prescribed curriculum. Additionally, Statistics and Computer Science are offered as supporting disciplines. The M.Sc. programmes in Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Extension were initiated in 2009, while the Ph.D. programmes commenced in 2013. The ABM programme, introduced in 2017, aims to develop managerial and entrepreneurial competencies with a focus on agribusiness development and value chain management.

Overall, the School has made significant contributions to human resource development and research, with its students and faculty producing scholarly outputs in reputed journals and contributing to the socio-economic advancement of the region.
